Once you have chosen the type of flooring that best suits your lifestyle, the next step is to chose the design and colour. Choosing the right colour flooring for your home, can be a design feature and a practical solution. Whilst finding a colour that compliments your home is important, so is understanding the practical aspect of choosing a light or dark flooring.

Darker Shades

A great choice to provide contrast and a dramatic statement. Whether you choose wood, LVT or laminate, there are plenty of shades to choose from. But is a dark colour the best option for your home? Here are some aspects to consider…

Room Size – Light or Dark Flooring

For smaller rooms, a darker floor requires a little more thought. If you are wanting a darker colour scheme, a dark floor may be over kill. If you love the idea of having a darker floor, be sure to chose a lighter, paler colour scheme. This will help to avoid the room feeling even smaller.

Darker floors in a larger room, will provide a rich and classical look. You could chose to compliment it with paler colours, to create a dramatic statement. Or chose a more colourful pallet for warmth and grandeur.

A darker flooring will provide the illusion of depth, making the walls of the room feel longer and taller.

Practicality – Light or Dark Flooring

When it comes to cleaning, a lighter coloured flooring will undoubtedly show up everyday dirt and debris more than a dark flooring. However, there are some exceptions to this rule.

A flooring that has a smooth and shiny/ silk finish will show up dust and dirt or scratches more evidently than a textured flooring. This is especially apparent when your room has an abundance of natural light.

If you have a busy house hold, with children and pets, it may be best to chose a flooring that has a textured surface.

Another facture to consider is the variation of tones and colour. If the flooring you choose has a design with many different shades, it is more likely to disguise everyday dirt and debris. A flooring with one solid colour is more likely to show up any imperfections that may occur.

Lighter Shades

Choosing a lighter coloured flooring, can help to create a light modern and calm feel. Associated with interior themes such as Scandi and minimalism; paler lighter shades can make your home feel spacious and clean.

As mentioned earlier, the lighter the colour, the more likely you will see dirt and debris. Regular cleaning, with an appropriate cleaning product, will help to ensure your flooring will keep it’s appearance. If you have an incredibly busy home life, choosing a style with a variety of shades, will help to disguise everyday dirt and debris.

It is also advisable to add door mats at all areas that lead to and from outside. This will help to reduce the amount of dirt collecting on your floor.
