A guide to real wood flooring
Real wood flooring shouldn’t be confused with wood effect flooring, which is flooring that is designed to look like wood. Real wood flooring is exactly what it sounds like – flooring made with real wood.
There are two types of wooden flooring – solid wood and engineered wood. Solid wood flooring is solid blocks of wood that have been cut to size and shape so they can be fitted together, usually with a tongue and groove system. Engineered wood floors have a layer of real wood on the top, and the rest is made up of structural plywood to give it the required thickness.
You can choose from a range of timbers for your floor, with oak and pine being two of the most popular.
Benefits of wood flooring
Wood flooring looks fantastic, but there are practical benefits too. Wood is one of the most durable flooring types and will last a lifetime. It can be sanded down and refinished multiple times to remove scuffs and scrapes or to give it a new look. Not only does it last for decades, but, if properly maintained, it actually improves its appearance with age.
Is wood flooring right for you?
Real wood flooring can be expensive, but it’s longer lasting than other flooring types, so if you aren’t planning on moving soon, it’s a great investment. You can also refinish your wood floor multiple times by sanding it down and then staining, white-washing, painting or varnishing it.
Wood can be used in any room but is not usually recommended for bathrooms because it doesn’t react well to too much moisture. Solid wood flooring can also amplify noise, so if you’re using it in upstairs rooms, you might want to put rugs down. If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to real wood, then there are some fantastic wood effect options, such as laminate and vinyl or LVT.
