Which are the best flooring colours for a timeless look?

Remember the avocado bathroom trend of the 70s? Varying shades of green were the height of fashion. But like so many fashion fads, it soon became outdated, with people voting it one of the worst décor styles of all time.

And despite claims that avocado bathrooms are making a comeback, it’s probably little consolation to those who have suffered with sage for the past few decades.

So when it comes to choosing your new flooring, it’s understandable you might be cautious. You probably don’t want to invest in some passing fad that will take 50 years to come back into fashion.

The good news is you don’t have to. There are plenty of flooring colours that remain timeless.

Get the natural wood look without the big price tag

The popularity of wooden flooring has already stood the test of time and will never lose its appeal.

If you’re looking to lay boards in a small or poorly lit area, then choosing a lighter shade is usually the best way to go. Dark wood can make a small room look dingy and drain natural light, which is something to be wary about if your room is already on the dark side. Lighter-coloured boards can open up even the tightest of spaces to make them appear bigger.

To further open your space, lay your wooden planks lengthways instead of widthways to elongate the room.

And if your budget doesn’t stretch to real wood, you’re in luck. These days there are easier and more cost-effective ways to recreate the appearance of wood.

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)

If you’re looking for a versatile style of flooring to suit any room, you can’t go wrong with an LVT wood effect floor.

LVT has countless benefits. It is long-lasting, water and stain-resistant, and will cost you far less than a real wooden floor. It requires less maintenance without losing the premium feel that genuine wood adds to the home. It’s a win-win.

Coming in a variety of stunning styles, LVT has a texture to it that really replicates wood, adding an air of authenticity to your home. From washed oak to a classic herringbone design, the style you choose can turn your home from bland to breath-taking.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate is another option to create your wood effect flooring. This flooring is made from multiple layers, remains budget-friendly and still creates a classy look.

Laminate suits the minimalistic style that is all the rage at the moment and gives you a strong base to add your own creative flair. As styles change there is nothing to stop you accessorising your floors with fashionable rugs, giving the room a more rustic feel.

The best colour to go for is something light and natural. Something that will match your walls no matter how many times you paint them. Particularly in small spaces, a light shade of laminate can really open up the area, making it look and feel bigger.

Keeping it classy with carpet

Carpet is a popular flooring choice for a reason. It keeps the home warm, makes a comfortable space for playing, sitting, and relaxing, and even traps dust particles, keeping them out of the air until you hoover again.

When it comes to colour, you have complete free range, although there are a handful of shades that are popular for a reason.

Grey

Let’s talk about grey. We’ve all seen the increase in grey as a go-to choice for carpets, walls and home decor. Some call it the “Hinch effect”.

Mrs Hinch gained popularity on social media for her cleaning tips and home décor. Since she rose to fame, there has been a huge surge in people recreating her signature grey, crushed velvet furnishings.

But even Miss Hinch has moved on from the coolness of grey to a new pad that sports more neutral, warm tones.

And while grey carpet is still popular for a reason – it’s easy to pair with other colours – ‘all grey everything’ may be a trend that is slowly dying out.

So if you opt for grey carpet, make it feel more 2022 by pairing it with pops of colour such as blue, pink, or yellow. There are a variety of gorgeous grey tones that can give you a strong foundation to build from, and by adding eye-catching patterns and brighter hues you can make the grey feel more contemporary.

As new trends come and go, you can accessorise your grey carpet to keep it stylish.

Cream

Cream carpet gives a mature, sophisticated and luxurious feel. It brightens up the home, especially if you have darker walls or furniture. If you have black or grey accents in the room, they will really stand out against the contrast of a cream carpet.

However, if you have pets or children this may not be the best option. Cream carpet is more likely to stain and makes hair and dirt more visible. It also requires regular cleaning to keep it pristine, and won’t be very forgivable to spills and stains, so invest in a good carpet cleaner.

Brown

Brown carpet sounds boring, but there are so many gorgeous shades of earthy brown that can give a cosy, snug vibe to your home. Neutral and non-offensive, brown gives you the freedom to choose any colour palette for your walls, furniture and décor.

This colour is less likely to show wear and tear, so it is a durable option if you don’t have the funds to keep replacing your carpet every few years. Plus, it adds warmth to your home, whether you go for a deep chocolate brown or a lighter taupe colour.

Beige

Beige is another neutral option for your carpet that is welcoming, warm, and never goes out of style. From golden beach beige to a lighter pebble colour, there are so many different tones to explore under this category.

It might be a good idea to get some samples and test them against your furniture to see which shade of beige is the right match for your home.
